Juice Jacking

Juice jacking is a type of cyber attack involving a charging port that doubles as a data connection, usually via USB. This often involves installing malware or secretly copying sensitive data from a smartphone, tablet, or other computing device.
The power/data cables we see at public charging stations offer attackers unauthorized access while charging exploits illegitimate access to take our personal information. This is known as juice jacking, a type of cyber attack launched from a USB charging port installed in public places such as airports, subways, coffee shops, bus stops, etc. Once the device is plugged in and connected, it installs malware or secretly copies sensitive data from a smartphone, tablet, or other computing device.

TYPES OF JUICE JACKING:

  • Data theft: During the charge phase, data will be stolen from this connected device.
  • Malware installation: Once the connection is established, malware will be installed on the connected device. The malware remains on the infected device until a user detects and removes it.

Prevent from juice jacking attacks:

  • Avoid public charging stations.
  • Use your deviceโ€™s software security measures
  • Use a USB data blocker or juice-Jacker defender, a USB battery, or a backup battery
  • Charge the phone by making it switch off because data doesn’t flow when the device is off.
